Pre’s Trail is a running trail designed by and named after the late track star Steve Prefontaine (1951-1975), one of Eugene’s hometown heroes. The trail was based on Pre’s experiences running cross-country in Europe. Upon returning to the United States he set out to design a similar course. Sadly, Pre was unable to ever run on the completed trail, which was finished just a few months after his death. Though the death of one of the most talented and respected runners of the 20th century is a tragedy, it reminds us of the fleeting nature of things. The Trail is central to the park and is a great place to run and train year round.
